Am I Spamming? and if so, why shouldn’t I

A follower on twitter complained about my sending spam.  This person seemed quite disappointed so I have to assume they have enjoyed my tweets and/or blog posts in the past. I have an account with revtwt that automatically posts 3 ads per day.

I write original content for my blog.  I paid for my domain and I pay for my web hosting and NOBODY even clicks on a banner or Google link that could return me a little bit to cover the expense of my giving out original content based on my unique experience and uncommon point of view.  So I have three automatic ads and am called a spammer.  Meanwhile my timeline is stuffed full with spam posts from robot twitter accounts that post NOTHING BUT ads and doubtlessly many of my followers have clicked on those to reward the spammers for spamming or there wouldn’t be so many spammers operating.

For those of you who hate spam – as I also do – I have one suggestion.  DO click on the few ads that people who provide content you like occasionally submit, or that they have on their sites, as a way of saying ‘thank you’ and DON’T click on the ads or buy the products that spammers offer.  That is really the only tangible way of increasing quality content and reducing spam over the long term – make spamming unprofitable.

I don’t relish having stuff about whitening teeth in my tweets but honestly, that’s the only thing that provides even a few pennies to keep my site up with.  Less than one out of a thousand visitors to my site click an ad.  You DO click on spam but you don’t click while reading and enjoying good original content.  Yet that’s where you all SHOULD click if you really want support genuine content and want to see spam slowly dwindle away.

So what should I do?  You tell me.  I know that Google’s bot is part of the problem.  It can’t seem to figure out what I’m talking about so it posts links to ‘the death penalty’ or other uninviting crap.  (It’s just about as bad as the teeth whitening tweets)  But I do have a google custom search bar though.  Surely you could find something interesting there that is worth a simple click.
